As part of our coursework during our year at Ethnos360 Training, we got to hike out to the woods and live off-grid for 17 days along with the rest of our class. All three of us loved being outdoors so much! The class was divided into four teams, and each team had a limited weight and volume for packing supplies. This was to simulate the reality tribal church planters face in being limited to what can fit into a mission airplane. This, among other things, meant 2-3 months of very detailed planning beforehand. Our “houses” were simple wooden pole structures covered with old billboards. All of our food and hot water were prepared over a fire. The nights got chilly, but overall the weather was great. On weekday mornings we had classes on various practical skills like butchering, small engines, plumbing, suturing, and more. In the afternoons we had classes on things like teamwork and biblical peacemaking. Almost all of our “free time” was spent manually processing firewood, prepping and cleaning up from meals, and letting Ivan explore while not letting him get into too much trouble around the fires, tools, rocks, etc.
